Random meeting URL generator

Up until a few weeks ago, whenever I would create a new link from scratch or duplicate an old link, an automatically and randomly generated meeting URL would be filled in. That random, pre-filled meeting URL seems to have been removed, as I now need to fill out a custom meeting URL myself when creating a new link from scratch or duplicating an old link. I don't want people to be able to 'guess' my meeting URL (e.g. competitors trying to figure out who I'm speaking with), which is why I prefer the randomly generated meeting URL. Can we get this feature back please?

Derrick Reimer I don't quite understand, does the random link generator work with Google Meet?

Feb 18, 2025

Bastien Vairet: Yes, Google Meet generates a unique meeting link for each calendar event.

Feb 19, 2025

Derrick Reimer This is not clear in the interface. What do I have to do to get these random links? Google Meet is not offered as a meeting place.

Feb 19, 2025

Bastien Vairet: Google Meet is available as a location option when Google Calendar is the place where event invitations are configured to be created for the particular link.

Feb 19, 2025

Derrick Reimer I see! But this is a bit of a blind spot then. Because I need to send the invitations in iCloud Calendar first. I'd like to send it to Google Calendar too, but it looks like I can only choose one calendar. As a result, I can't use Google Meet. Is this what I understood correctly? Do you have any plans to improve this?

Bastien Vairet: That's correct. To be honest, you might be the only customer that needs Google Meet on an iCloud calendar :). My recommendation is to use Google Calendar as the event store, especially if you need Meet links -- everything is just smoother that way, because Google leverages its advantage as the ubiquitous platform to get the calendar event on all the attendee's calendars.

Derrick Reimer oh no! Am I the only person who uses iCloud calendar but needs Google Meet for my meetings? I'd have thought that was the case for many users of the Apple ecosystem. It doesn't seem strange to me at all, the reason is quite simple: Apple doesn't offer a meeting link (unless Savvycal integrates Facetime natively) and Google Meet is the only free, mass-market solution! I hate Google Calendar, Apple Calendar is much better suited to my needs, which is why I don't use Google Calendar.

Feb 20, 2025

Bastien Vairet: You can still use the Apple Calendar client with Google Calendar as the backing store for your calendar -- this might get you the best of both worlds.

Feb 20, 2025

Derrick Reimer I'll try, but the obvious problem is that it's impossible to edit an event held by Google Calendar from the Apple client, but maybe I'm wrong.

Feb 20, 2025

Bastien Vairet: You can definitely create/modify/delete Google Calendar events via the Apple Calendar client!

Feb 25, 2025

Derrick Reimer I've tested this solution, but here's what's wrong with it. Google events are not part of the Apple Calendar, so even if they are readable from Apple Calendar, they will not be present in Apple Calendar integrations with external tools. When you use a mixture of Google Calendar and Apple Calendar, your calendar is no longer unified and most tools that use calendar integrations won't be compatible, as you'll have to synchronise two different calendar accounts, which is often either unavailable or expensive (e.g. Morgen, Notion Calendar, etc). So, as a user of the Apple ecosystem, which I use for reasons of personal comfort and confidentiality, I regret not having access to a meeting room url generation system. I don't use Google Calendar, I don't use Gmail, Zoom and Whereby are not free.

Hi Arka Der Stepanian, hmm nothing has changed on our end around conferencing URL generation. We'd be happy to take a closer look at your specific setup at support [at] savvycal.com.
